Essential Aspects of Western Red Cedar Lumber Association Span Table
The Western Red Cedar Lumber Association (WRCLA) has developed a span table that provides essential information for engineers, architects, and contractors when designing structures using Western Red Cedar lumber. The span table takes into account factors such as species, grade, moisture content, and loading conditions to determine the maximum span for a given member.
The species of Western Red Cedar lumber used is an important factor in determining its span capacity. WRCLA grades Western Red Cedar lumber into two distinct grades: No. 1 and No. 2. No. 1 grade lumber is the stronger and stiffer of the two grades, and will have a higher span capacity than No. 2 grade lumber.
The moisture content of Western Red Cedar lumber also affects its span capacity. Lumber with a higher moisture content will be weaker and less stiff than lumber with a lower moisture content. WRCLA recommends using lumber with a moisture content of 19% or less for structural applications.
The loading conditions on a beam or joist will also affect its span capacity. WRCLA provides span tables for three different loading conditions: live load only, dead load only, and a combination of live and dead load. The live load is the weight of people, furniture, and other objects that will be placed on the beam or joist, while the dead load is the weight of the beam or joist itself and any permanent fixtures attached to it.
The WRCLA span table is a valuable resource for engineers, architects, and contractors when designing structures using Western Red Cedar lumber. By using the span table, designers can ensure that their structures are safe and meet building codes.
