How to Make a Round Pedestal Table Base

A round pedestal table base is a beautiful and elegant addition to any dining room or kitchen. It's a versatile piece of furniture that can be used with a variety of tabletops, from glass to wood. In this article, we will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to make a round pedestal table base.

Materials:

  • 12/4 pine lumber (or another hardwood of your choice)
  • Wood glue
  • Clamps
  • Sander
  • Drill
  • 1/2-inch Forstner bit
  • 1/4-inch drill bit
  • 3/8-inch drill bit
  • Countersink bit
  • Wood screws (1 1/4-inch and 2 1/2-inch)
  • Tabletop of your choice

Instructions:

1. Cut the lumber

Begin by cutting the lumber to the following dimensions:

  • 4 legs: 32 inches long
  • 4 aprons: 18 inches long
  • 1 stretcher: 14 1/2 inches long
2. Assemble the legs and aprons

Apply wood glue to the ends of the aprons and then clamp them to the inside of the legs, 6 inches from the top. Make sure that the aprons are flush with the top of the legs. Allow the glue to dry completely.

3. Drill the holes for the stretcher

Use a 1/2-inch Forstner bit to drill a hole 2 inches from the bottom of each leg. The hole should be 1/2-inch deep.

4. Assemble the stretcher

Apply wood glue to the ends of the stretcher and then insert it into the holes you drilled in the legs. Clamp the stretcher in place and allow the glue to dry completely.

5. Sand the base

Once the glue is dry, sand the base smooth. Start with a coarse-grit sandpaper and then gradually move to a finer-grit sandpaper.

6. Drill the holes for the tabletop

Use a 1/4-inch drill bit to drill four holes 1 inch from the top of the base. The holes should be spaced evenly around the perimeter of the base.

7. Countersink the holes

Use a countersink bit to countersink the holes so that the screws will sit flush with the surface of the base.

8. Attach the tabletop

Place the tabletop on top of the base and align the holes. Drive 1 1/4-inch wood screws through the holes and into the base. Tighten the screws until the tabletop is secure.

9. Reinforce the base (optional)

For added strength, you can reinforce the base by adding two additional stretchers. Cut two pieces of lumber to 14 1/2 inches long and then drill 1/2-inch holes 2 inches from each end. Insert the stretchers into the holes and clamp them in place. Allow the glue to dry completely and then drive 2 1/2-inch wood screws through the holes and into the stretchers.

Your round pedestal table base is now complete! Enjoy your new piece of furniture.
