How to Refelt a Non-Slate Pool Table
Refelting a pool table is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few hours. However, it is important to take your time and follow the instructions carefully to ensure a professional-looking finish. Here are the essential steps on how to refelt a non-slate pool table:
Materials Needed:
- New felt
- Scissors
- Staple gun
- Staples
- Measuring tape
- Chalk
- Iron and ironing board (optional)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Table
Start by removing the old felt from the table. Use a staple remover to carefully pull out the staples holding the felt in place. Once the old felt is removed, clean the table surface thoroughly with a damp cloth.
2. Measure and Cut the New Felt
Measure the playing surface of the table and add 6 inches to each side. Cut the new felt to the desired size. If you are using a patterned felt, make sure to align the pattern correctly.
3. Center the Felt
Place the new felt on the table and center it carefully. Use chalk to mark the center point of the table and the center point of the felt. Align the center points and smooth out the felt.
4. Staple the Felt
Starting in the center, staple the felt to the table. Use a staple gun and staples that are long enough to penetrate through the felt and into the table surface. Space the staples about 1 inch apart.
5. Trim the Excess Felt
Once the felt is stapled in place, use scissors to trim the excess felt around the edges of the table. Leave about 1/4 inch of felt overhang.
6. Iron the Felt (Optional)
If desired, you can iron the felt to remove any wrinkles. Place the ironing board on the table and cover it with a clean cloth. Set the iron to a low heat setting and gently iron the felt.
7. Enjoy Your Refelted Table
Your pool table is now refelted and ready to play. Enjoy the new felt and the improved playing surface.
Tips:
- Use a good quality felt that is specifically designed for pool tables.
- Take your time and follow the instructions carefully.
- If you are not confident in your ability to refelt the table yourself, hire a professional.
- Regularly clean the felt with a brush or vacuum cleaner to keep it in good condition.
