The Essential Rules of Bumper Pool on an Octagon Table

Bumper pool, also known as octagon, is a fun and challenging billiards game played on a unique octagon-shaped table. While similar to regular billiards, bumper pool has its own rules and gameplay quirks that make it an exciting game for players of all skill levels.

The standard bumper pool table is shaped like an octagon, with eight sides and eight pockets. The table has a raised bumper around the perimeter, and the object of the game is to sink all of your colored balls into the pockets before your opponent.

Setup

To setup the game, place the white cue ball in the center of the table. Then, position the eight colored balls in a diamond shape around the center ball, with the black ball in the center.

Gameplay

The game begins with the first player hitting the cue ball into the colored balls. The player can use the bumpers to bank shots off of, and they can also use the cue ball to knock the colored balls into the pockets.

If a player sinks a ball, they get to shoot again. If they miss, their turn is over. The game continues until one player has sunk all of their colored balls.

Scoring

Each colored ball is worth a different number of points:

  • Red: 1 point
  • Blue: 2 points
  • Pink: 3 points
  • Yellow: 4 points
  • Orange: 5 points
  • Purple: 6 points
  • Green: 7 points
  • Black: 8 points

The first player to sink all of their colored balls wins the game. If both players sink all of their colored balls at the same time, the game is a draw.

Fouls

There are several fouls that can be committed in bumper pool:

  • Hitting the black ball into a pocket
  • Jumping the cue ball over the bumpers
  • Bumping the cue ball with another ball
  • Sinking the cue ball

If a player commits a foul, they lose their turn.

Strategy

There are several strategies that can be used to win at bumper pool. Some of the most effective strategies include:

  • Bank shots off the bumpers
  • Using the cue ball to knock the colored balls into the pockets
  • Blocking your opponent's shots
  • Sinking the black ball last

With practice, you can develop your own strategies and become a master of bumper pool on an octagon table.
