How to Create a Retractable Table: A Step-by-Step Guide

A retractable table is a versatile and space-saving solution for any living space. Whether you need extra dining space for guests or a work surface that can be easily stowed away, a retractable table is a great choice. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you build your own:

Materials:

  • 1 sheet of 3/4-inch plywood (48 inches x 24 inches)
  • 1 sheet of 1/4-inch plywood (48 inches x 24 inches)
  • 1 pair of 16-inch metal table legs
  • 1 pair of 12-inch metal table legs
  • 1 pair of table hinges
  • 1 pair of drawer slides
  • Wood screws
  • Finishing nails
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Tools:

  • Circular saw
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil

Instructions:

  1. Cut the Plywood: Cut the 3/4-inch plywood into two pieces: one 24 inches x 24 inches and one 24 inches x 12 inches. Cut the 1/4-inch plywood into two pieces: one 24 inches x 24 inches and one 24 inches x 6 inches.
  2. Attach the 1/4-Inch Plywood: Attach the 24 inches x 24 inches piece of 1/4-inch plywood to the bottom of the larger 3/4-inch plywood piece. Use wood screws to secure it.
  3. Attach the Table Legs: Attach the 16-inch table legs to the corners of the table. Use wood screws to secure them.
  4. Attach the Retractable Legs: Attach the 12-inch table legs to the inside of the smaller 3/4-inch plywood piece. Use wood screws to secure them.
  5. Install the Drawer Slides: Install the drawer slides on the underside of the larger 3/4-inch plywood piece. Make sure they are evenly spaced.
  6. Attach the Retractable Table Top: Slide the smaller 3/4-inch plywood piece onto the drawer slides. Secure it with finishing nails.
  7. Install the Table Hinges: Install the table hinges on the back edge of the smaller 3/4-inch plywood piece and the bottom edge of the larger 3/4-inch plywood piece. Make sure they are aligned correctly.
  8. Finishing Touches: Paint or stain the table as desired. Allow it to dry thoroughly.

Your retractable table is now complete! To use it, simply pull the smaller table top towards you until it is fully extended. To retract it, simply push the smaller table top back towards the larger table top until it is folded up and out of sight.
