How To Make Picnic Table Bench Covers

Materials

1 yard of fabric
1/2 yard of batting
1/4 yard of cording
Sewing machine
Thread
Scissors
Measuring tape or ruler
Iron and ironing board

Instructions

Measure the length and width of your picnic table bench. Add 2 inches to each measurement for seam allowances.
Cut two pieces of fabric and two pieces of batting to the measurements you took in step 1.
Place one piece of fabric right side up on your work surface. Place one piece of batting on top of the fabric, then place the other piece of fabric on top of the batting, right side down.
Pin the layers together around the edges. Leave a 4-inch opening on one side for turning.
Sew around the edges of the cover, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of your stitching.
Turn the cover right side out through the opening. Press the cover with an iron to smooth out the seams.
Fold the raw edges of the opening inward and press them. Topstitch around the opening to close it.
Cut the cording into two equal pieces. Thread one piece of cording through each of the two loops on the cover. Tie the ends of the cording together to secure the cover to the bench.

Tips

You can use any type of fabric you like to make your picnic table bench covers. However, outdoor fabrics are more durable and will withstand the elements better.
If you want your covers to be extra comfortable, you can add a layer of foam between the fabric and the batting.
You can also add embellishments to your covers, such as piping, rickrack, or embroidery.
