How to Refinish Oak Kitchen Table and Chairs
Oak is a popular wood for kitchen tables and chairs because it is durable and has a beautiful grain. However, over time, oak furniture can become scratched, dented, or faded. Materials you will need:
* Sandpaper (120-grit, 180-grit, and 220-grit) * Tack cloth * Wood cleaner * Wood conditioner * Wood stain (optional) * Polyurethane (optional) * Sponge brush or paintbrush * GlovesInstructions:
1. Preparation * Remove all hardware from the table and chairs. * Clean the furniture with wood cleaner and a tack cloth to remove any dirt or debris. * Allow the furniture to dry completely. 2. Sanding * Start by sanding the furniture with 120-grit sandpaper. Sand in the direction of the grain. * Once you have sanded the entire surface, switch to 180-grit sandpaper and sand again. * Finally, sand the furniture with 220-grit sandpaper to smooth out the surface. 3. Conditioning * Apply wood conditioner to the furniture with a sponge brush or paintbrush. Allow the conditioner to penetrate the wood for according to the manufacturer's instructions. * Wipe off any excess conditioner with a clean cloth. 4. Staining (Optional) * If you want to change the color of the furniture, apply wood stain with a sponge brush or paintbrush. Allow the stain to penetrate the wood for according to the manufacturer's instructions. * Wipe off any excess stain with a clean cloth. 5. Finishing * Apply polyurethane to the furniture with a sponge brush or paintbrush. Allow the polyurethane to dry completely. * Sand the furniture lightly with 220-grit sandpaper to smooth out the finish. * Apply a second coat of polyurethane and allow it to dry completely. 6. Reassembly * Once the polyurethane has dried, reassemble the furniture and hardware. Your oak kitchen table and chairs are now refinished and looking like new!
